The problem is known and recognised all over the world: private car traffic in the city center is causing congestion and bad air quality, which results in huge loss for the society in health, time and money. Cities all over the world are moving towards green transportation and are nudging their residents to ditch the car. Thanks to all the shared mobility solutions and various micro-mobility providers, it is now also becoming easier.
Following the New Mobility Forum in Germany, a collaboration between private mobility services and public transport organisations initiated by The Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), Berlin does not stop showing its support and creativity when it comes to easing congestion in dense urban areas.
The Sommerflotte
The Sommerflotte is a mobility project run by eMo, Insel-Projekt Berlin and Neue Mobilität Berlin in the area of Berlin Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf in partnership with the University of Technology and mobility operators of the german capital. The concept is adorable, catchy, and above all very practical.
One key to open thousands of vehicles
Residents who wish to take part in the project need to drop their car keys and in return they get access to thousands of sustainable vehicles by shared mobility providers and public transport companies. This year Donkey Republic is also part of the project, so Berliners who wish to move around car-free can hop on a Donkey Bike in Berlin and in all other Donkey cities, free of charge throughout the Sommerflotte campaign.
